The Myths of Job Testing
Some of the principals refuse to recourse to psychological testing in their recruiting search. As a rule, they mostly follow four habitual beliefs, which however have long been in contrary to the facts. They are the myths of this is against moral rules, this is expensive, this takes a long time”and this has no result.
Myth #1: „It is against moral rules″
Psychological tests, as distinct from official forms, operate with questions that touch upon particularly private and even intimate issues of person’s life. Being tactful, a lot of employers will try to avoid it, since a process of psychological testing reminds them undressing the person naked or keyhole peeping. In fact, this is far from being true. Recruiting tests’ reports do not contain any information about private life and intimate sphere of the testee. The initial answers remain confidential and are used in the process only because they help to create an integral idea of a person and assist in producing a more correct estimation of his or her professional features. For this reason, psychological testing as a part of job interview is widely used even in the countries where invasion of privacy is considered a violation of moral rules and even law.
Myth #2: „It is expensive″
Those who claim that job testing is expensive most likely have never tried to find out the recent prices for such a service. Some time ago it really used to be a hard and expensive process that required professional help. As soon as computer techniques became popular, testing and processing of the testing results turned into a pipelined procedure. Its prices decreased and became cheaper than payment for the services of a professional recruiting manager who would be obliged to have a personal talk with dozens or hundreds of clients. Myth #3: „It is time-consuming″
This opinion has not gone yet probably since the period when the main job test was MMPI or rather its career-guidance version. This test numbered 600 questions. The questions were rather complicated and required mature reflection. In the average, the process took 2-3 hours. Moreover, this test would not provide comprehensive information, thus you would have to use other tests to supply it. As a result, the process of job interview would last for a whole working day. Modern techniques use other principles. Systematic approach and computer elaboration enabled us to reduce the amount of questions and to simplify them without any loss for the effectiveness and veraciousness of the test. In particular, job testing offered here takes approximately 10 minutes.
Myth #4: „It has no result″
Psychological testing as a part of job interview has been used for a long time and in many spheres, both in huge enterprises and small companies. It helps to save millions of dollars and nobody will doubt its effectiveness and usefulness. It depends only on professional skills of the developers of the method, exercising of its statistical sampling and its versatility for the current conditions.
Summary
With present-day conditions in mind, psychological testing in the sphere of recruiting management appears to be the most effective, quickest and cheapest method of job placement. It allows you to choose the candidates among dozens, hundreds and thousands of people in minimal time and with minimal cost.
